Leon Valley Texas Roofer Bret Hannah, President of Rhino Tuff Roofing, Shows How to Measure Your Roof
Measuring a roof is easy once you know some roofing terminology and a couple of simple rules of geometry.
Roofers express area in “squares”. A “square” is 100 square feet, a 10′ x 10′ area.
1 square=100 square feet.
Going back to some high school geometry, the area of a rectangular shape is found by measuring the length of the shape and multiplying this by the height of the shape. Trick: this also works for a parallelogram. (see examples)
For Triangular shapes, the formula is just a little different. Look at the following example and you can see how and why this works. The formula is ½ x length x height. Notice that the area of the triangle is exactly half the area of the rectangle or parallelogram above.
Knowing how to use these two formulas, you can measure almost any roof. (I say almost any because we didn’t discuss measuring curved sections of roof). In the example below, both a Hip roof and a Gable roof are shown. This will allow us to use both formulas shown above.
Draw a plan view of your roof and take some measurements. Break the sections up into rectangles and triangles like we did in the above example. Add an additional 10% on a gable roof and 15% on a hip roof for scrap, round the total up to the nearest whole number, and you will have the total amount of “Squares” you will need to re-roof you house. Note that your total roofing estimate will have additional charges for Ridges, Valleys, total length of Eaves, quantity of Vents, Turbines, Chimneys, etc. Make sure your estimates include all of these; you don’t want any surprises later.
113 SQUARES + 10% = 124.3 (113 X 1.1 = 124.3)
Round up to the nearest whole number.
124.3 ~ 125 TOTAL SQUARES REQUIRED
CAUTION: If you are not comfortable climbing onto your roof and taking measurements, wait for your insurance adjustor or roofing professional (Rhino Tuff Roofing provides this service for free). Both should provide this service free of charge.
